What a freakin’ BLAST watching these dogs jump their little hearts out this weekend!!! My goal was to get some practice with action shots and man did I ever📸

Normally I’m all about the sun, but I’m kind of loving this image of Cooper near twilight. The color purple symbolizes royalty so it’s pretty fitting how regal he looks👑

BTS, this spot was at the tippy top of a burn area in the preserve and, while Coop had a lonely patch of flowers to sit in, I was laying in char and dirt…probably on top of an ant colony🐜

I’m still itching bites this morning.

Emerge Challenge // Spaced Out

Challenge #2 in the @unleashed.ed Emerge program was to create an image using negative space. I missed the mark entirely!! The coaches said my image is beautiful, which made my heart happy to hear, but it was more of a landscape shot than one that uses negative space to draw attention to the subject.

Oh, and I need to desaturate my greens a little bit. I do love bold colors🙃

Back to the drawing board!

My heart is still a puddle of mush after meeting sugar-faced Finn this morning for his Tails of the World session. His resemblance to my dog Moe, who passed about ten years ago, literally took my breath away🥹

It’s truly a testament to the bond we share with dogs that years after they’ve left us we can still feel such strong emotions when we think of them. That’s pretty special, if you ask me.

And on a less sappy note…

For new friends who might not be in the know—this year I’ve been selected to participate in the global fundraiser Tails of the World and locally we raised $3405 to benefit the @mrmoproject. As part of this worldwide fundraiser, ten Capital Region dogs have been selected to be photographed by me and one of their images will be printed in the Tails of the World coffee table book. The book will be published and available for purchase via major online retailers November 1st📚

It’s so hard to find the right words when sharing the story of a dog nearing the end of their time with us. There’s so much emotion and weight.

I may struggle to choose the perfect thing to say, but hopefully these images are able to convey even just a little bit of the deep love between Bailey and her moms❤️

One thing I love about being a photographer is the need to be a lifelong learner, constantly working on improving your craft. The learning curve is STEEP at the beginning, but participating in the workshops and challenges provided by @unleashed.ed has been incredibly helpful.

This year I’m tackling their Emerge competition—a 6-month challenge involving 12 photos, each with an assigned theme, and we’re given valuable critique at the end of each submission. And of course it’s a competition so we’re all striving to make the top ten!

The first challenge is Framed🖼️ We were required to photograph a dog or pet framed either partially or fully with environmental elements. I submitted this image of my friend Oliver framed by a tree in Congress Park. While I didn’t place in the top 10, I did get some great feedback on how I could’ve improved things with crop, highlights, light and color…the details of which I won’t share here because non-photographers would find it wonky😉

Anyway, big thanks to Oliver and his parents for helping with this! Also, a huge shoutout to the other two dogs I photographed in an attempt to get an image for this challenge, Han Solo and Rosie❤️

Confession: photographing my own dogs is HARD.

It’s my own fault, of course. I didn’t train them to pose, get up on objects or look at me. They’re both highly treat-motivated so that’s a little helpful, but Sadie (pictured) usually looks like an ASPCA poster dog and Dexter loses all sense of composure at the sight of a mere morsel of food.

Most of the photos I took this afternoon were utter garbage, but I think I managed to get a couple decent ones…despite Sadie’s best efforts to avoid eye contact (as pictured) or look like an abused animal🙃

I guess, in a way, it’s good practice for me. The best part though is that Sadie had a blast being out in the woods. And she got paid her modeling fee in peanut butter🥜

One key factor in deciding which artwork to purchase is determining the size of the portrait. If the print is too small for the space, you lose the impact of the image. FRED ❄️ Forget Me Not Session

Loving a dog is bittersweet. It’s pure and unconditional, but oh so brief. If only it could last our lifetime.

Fred’s family recently received an unhappy diagnosis so they brought him along on a weekend getaway to Lake Placid. I’m sure their time together was full of head scratches, warm snuggles and whispered words of affection in his perfect little velvet ears. I know how loved this sweet boy is❤️

Rumor has it Cass is a total couch potato and loves lounging with her human so no surprise we snapped a nice sofa pic😉

Cass is the absolute sweetest girl! Very well-behaved in the studio, happily shared her squeak toy with me and dished out kisses. She would make a great lifelong companion for an active person or family. She is currently in foster care with @outofthepitsrescue❤️

Does anyone else think these four are so gorgeous that this should be a magazine spread?! My gawd😍 Normally I try to stick to sharing around 5 images, but it was too tough to narrow it down from the 30 they purchased.

And I would just like to point out that Sparky rocks the gold cat bell! I was dying to photograph Marley with her flower crown—obviously—but the tiny bell on that sassy boy made me equally as happy🔔
